Born in Sinan-gun, Jeollanam-do, KIM Whanki was one of Korea’s first-generation abstract painters and was a leading figure in opening a new era in the realm of abstract painting for modern Korean art. Kim combined Eastern insights and Western reasoning by employing both Korea’s distinctive features and western modernity, by integrating abstract and figurative features. Kim’s works encompass not only the figurative, such as conveying Eastern subjects -- mountains, the moon, cranes, Japanese apricot flower or white porcelain -- in a Western style, to simple and symbolic abstract works embroidered with lines, dots or squares. Kim established his own creative realm of Korean beauty with various forms and content.
