Hyundai Hwarang is pleased to present ???????????? ???????????????????? ???????? ???????????? ????????????????????, a solo exhibition of Komelia H. Okim (b. 1939), a pioneer in Korean metal art. On view from November 1 to November 30, 2024, this exhibition showcases over three decades of Okim’s creative journey. ???????????? ???????????????????? ???????? ???????????? ???????????????????? highlights exquisite jewelry, monumental ritual vessels, and ornate mirrors, as well as metal sculptures from the 1990s, offering a rare and comprehensive insight into the evolution of her groundbreaking works.
Komelia H. Okim is a Korean American artist who has established a unique presence in the field of metal art since the 1960s. Through the creative fusion of East Asian aesthetics and Western modernism, she explores the limitless possibilities of metal as a medium, utilizing a diverse range of materials and techniques. Okim seamlessly integrates traditional Korean metal art techniques, such as Pomoksanggam, keum-boo, and ottchil, with a contemporary sensibility, with her works ranging from daily jewelry to metal artworks. Her creations reflect a deep influence from both Taoist philosophy, which emphasizes harmony with nature, and Christian philosophy.
