Chung Kyung-Yeon
2016.11.2~12.4
Hyundai Hwarang

Hyundai Hwarang is pleased to present a solo exhibition of Chung Kyoung-Yeon (b. 1955) from November 2nd to December 4th, 2016. Known as ‘the artist of gloves’, Chung Kyoung-Yeon has been working solely with the motif of gloves by using various materials and techniques for over forty years. While Chung was studying in the United States away from her home and family, Chung’s mother sent her daughter some cotton gloves which deeply touched Chung’s heart. Not only the gloves reminded her of her family, but also the wrinkled hands of a grandmother in gloves, hands of hard working people at dawn, hands of sign language and so many other images of hands went through Chung’s mind. Chung believes that anyone’s hands are equal when they are in a pair of cotton gloves, which idea drove Chung to work on the motifs of hands and gloves.

This exhibition will examine Chung’s oeuvre by presenting monochromatic paintings of old works along with Chung’s exploration with various colors and materials in her recent works, as Chung wishes for harmony and peace between religions and people of all generations through installations and video works.

Chung left to go study in the United States in 1974, her sophomore year at Hongik University. After earning a bachelor’s degree from Massachusetts College of Art and master’s degree from Rhode Island School of Design, she has been a professor at the college of Fine Arts of Hongik University since 1980.
