In Lee’s paintings, the abundant nature of Jeju island, which is often called “Hawaii of Korea” reveals a balance of life, where there is no subjects nor objects in his representations of the Oriental philosophy “middle road.” It is based on an egalitarian thinking that all life forms, be it humans, fish, birds, flowers, or even lowly microorganisms, are the center and essence of the universe. Lee conveys Korean sentiments through his use of vibrant colors to portray seemingly ordinary but peculiar world.
