SHIM Moon-Seup: The presentation to the Island
2014.9.3~9.27
Main space

In this exhibition, artist Shim Moon Seup (b. 1943), actively working in Tongyeong, Seoul, and Paris, will present recent works that show his true abilities as a master of Korean contemporary sculpture, along with paintings, on which the artist has been investing significant time lately. Shim, who has presented the Korean contemporary sculpture scene with new directions based on his constantly experimental and adventurous works, continues to lead the avant-garde experimental spirit in the international art scene, always challenging, and never settling in one place.

From 1971 to 1975, his works were introduced in the international stage, beginning at the Paris Biennale. In 1995 he was invited to the Venice Biennale as an artist representing Korea, together with Nam June Paik, where he exhibited Tiger's Tail, thus drawing the attention of the world art scene. In 2001 he also participated in the special exhibition of the Venice Biennale.

Working assiduously since the early 1970s until now, though artist Shim Moon Seup's titles have changed from Before the Present to Earth Figure, Spirit of Wood, Metaphor, and The Presentation, each with different medium and shape, the overall context shares the same conceptual roots. Recently the artist continues to work on poetically evoking landscapes that take place around the interpretation of subject matter, and the spaces or places surrounding it. Shim is still recognized today by the international world of art, following his successful exhibitions at Palais Royal in Paris, France (April 23 – June 30, 2007), and Musee des Arts Asiatiques in Nice, France (July 2 – September 30, 2008).

“Shim Moon Seup—The Presentation—to the Island” consists of 15 works—7 sculptures and 8 paintings. The sculptures are exhibited on the ground floor, while the paintings, which are being shown to the public for the first time, are mainly exhibited on the second floor.
